Myanmar born Kiwi Punnya Sai may not yet be a household name throughout New Zealand but it should only be a matter of time before fight fans start singing his praises.
Training out of Bali MMA, one of South East Asia's premier gyms, alongside fellow Kiwis Ev Ting, Nyrene Crowley, and John Brewin, Punnya Sai was handpicked by ONE Championship Vice President Rich Franklin, to join the second season of ONE Warrior Series.
Athletes who make the cut are given the opportunity to compete in four ONE Warrior Series bouts with the chance to earn a US$100,000 contract with ONE Championship.
Punnya Sai an instant impact in the series and has been labelled as one to watch by media pundits. After winning his debut contest via first-round submission, he looked even better in his follow up bout where he scored a dominant 14-second first-round stoppage victory.
A trip to Myanmar with Rich Franklin was filmed by the ONE Warrior Series crew and was turned into a stand-alone episode of the second season. The episode has been viewed over one hundred and fifty thousand times online and provides the perfect introduction to an athlete who is one of this country’s most exciting prospects.
New Zealand Fighter's Isaac Savage put some questions to Punnya Sai as part of his 5 n 5 series.
Burmese / Kiwi - what does it mean for you to represent both cultures on such a global level?
It means everything I’m honoured to be living a dream that is a reality for me but for some people it’s just a dream.
Still relatively young in the game , why do you think you have risen so fast in this cut throat fight world ?
I’ve got no idea but I work as hard as I can in the gym but I think it’s got to do with my coach Mike Ikilei for helping me out to be out in Bali and my gym Bali MMA and I get to surround myself with world class fighters.
Run us through the One Warrior TV Experience that was filmed within the last 6 months?
It was a honour to visit my birth country and get to know my family that I haven’t known for years , and I wanna thank OWS for giving me the opportunity to represent them.
2 Fights 2 wins on the One Warrior Fight Series - when can we see you next and what should we expect ?
I’m waiting for an opponent at the moment and hopefully bring back another win for the home country
What keeps you on track and focused when most your age are still figuring out life !
I want to provide for my family and not wanting to ask them for things I need I’m focused on doing the best I can and wanting to create my own path for the future
Join us live on the One Championship App for Punnya Sai’s next fight on April 25th !
