Dylan “The Villain” Andrews’ Return Home
Dylan “The Villain” Andrews, NZ MMA fighter, first turned heads as the first ever New Zealander to feature on the UFC show “The Ultimate Fighter 17: Team Jones v Team Sonnen” in January of 2013. Training with great names like Frank Mir (Jiu Jitsu) & Ricky Lundell (wrestling) on the show, he fought his way through to the semi-final. From here, he made a knock out entry later that year in August on his debut UFC Fight Night card where he beat his opponent via KO in the third round. Although residing in Australia, it was at this moment Tuhoe born Andrews became a proud household name for Mixed Martial Arts in New Zealand.
After an explosive start to his UFC career, Andrews’ fights in America were very successful. In Las Vegas he beat Jimmy Quinlan via TKO in the first round and in Indianapolis he beat Papy Abedi via KO in the third round. What is quite interesting is that Andrews next 3 UFC Fight Night fights were at a loss and were all fought in Australia (Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide). After these results, questions were raised and information started to circulate that Dylan Andrew’s contract had in fact been ended by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. We spoke with Dylan Andrews who has confirmed “my contract has ended for now yes that's true. Right now my focus is on the Gyms here in Tauranga, at least for the next 3months.”
As one door closes another certainly opens, Andrews has moved back to New Zealand and has taken the position as a full time head trainer at The Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Tauranga and states, “I'm happy with my position here and plan on growing the sport a lot more and making it more of a mainstream sport, as opposed to being more of a fringe type recreational sport.”
Although he is ready to make waves on the New Zealand MMA scene, the move has been a solo one, “the move back here feels right, and the only thing missing is my family which is still back on the Gold Coast so it's going take some time.”
Dylan Andrews is a man on a mission to not only be training MMA but to encourage a healthy living lifestyle in general for the people of his homeland “Another huge thing I want to focus on here is nutrition and getting people eating right, obviously it doesn't help that mainstream media promote a lot on horrible eating habits,” Andrews explains, “When I got here I was surprised at how many people used KFC as a landmark type place for me to find my way around the Mount/Tauranga, everyone would say you no where KFC is? Well it's close to that...”
Andrews is also currently training Tauranga based INVICTA fighter Faith “The Immortal” Van Duin as she prepares for her trip to Las Vegas for a shot at the World Featherweight title next month. We may see “The Villain” in a training capacity cornering Van Duin, “I’m still working on going to Vegas, not sure yet”.
