Great Guns gets it done - Extreme F1 Queen of Oceania Super 4 Results
Australian Alice ‘Guns’ Pestana used a combination of length setting kicks and composure to win the Extreme-F1 Queen of Oceania Super 4 tournament, capturing the Oceania Muay Thai title at the Te Atatu Peninsula Community Centre with a unanimous decision win over New Zealand’s Baybee ‘Pitbull’ Nansen.
The Eddy Lee promoted event featured four of the finest 57kg female Muay Thai practitioners from both sides of the Tasman as well as superfights featuring multiple division world champion Michelle ‘Pressure’ Preston and Joe ‘Southpaw’ Hopkins.
The ANZAC themed tournament consisted of Australia’s Pestana and Jen Cav squaring off against an aggressive kiwi contingent of Nansen and Daria ‘Boss’ Smith.
Pestana dominated the first two rounds of the final by controlling the distance and keeping Nansen’s furious charges at bay with straight punches and kicks.
'Pitbull' appeared to turn the tide in the final round, seemingly hurting Pestana with a spinning backfist before pouring on power punches.
Pestana opened the tournament with a split decision win against Smith.
Smith pressed hard throughout the bout however Pestana was able to remain composed in the face of this relentless attack, controlling space with kicks to the body and legs.
As the bout progressed Smith continued to set a high pace, closing distance and mounting damage on Pestana whose best work was done at range.
Baybee ‘Pitbull’ Nansen earned her finals birth topping Australia’s Jen Cav via unanimous decision in the other semi-final.
After a cagey opening round, both fighters found their timing in the second with Cav unable to keep the forceful ‘Pitbull’ off her.
Cav was able to box well and open up her arsenal in the final round, landing a nice spinning elbow.
Joe ‘Southpaw’ Hopkins weathered an early lightning strike to eek by Mike Kapi via split decision and qualify for the 75kg Extreme-F1 Kings tournament.
Hopkins attempted to use his length in the first round however was felled by a hard overhand right near the bell.
‘Southpaw’ was smarter with range in the second while Kapi pushed for closer exchanges in the following round and was able to land heavy right hands.
Hopkins found a real home for his left hand during the fourth round as Kapi seemingly started to wear.
With the fight close going into the final round, Kapi went out looking to make a statement, landing power punches and general throwing everything he could at Hopkins in a great effort.
Multi-division world champion and general title magnet Michelle ‘Pressure’ Preston utilised angles, volume and superior fitness to surge passed Aussie Karen ‘Bullet’ Williams in an international superfight.
Preston’s advantages in speed were evident early as she darted in and out of range firing combinations although weathering a Williams spinning elbow in the opening stanza.
Preston continued to push the pace in the second as she was able to pin Williams in the corner and land huge right hands and knees forcing Williams to load up on single shots.
Williams dug her heels in for the third and final round, which featured many hard exchanges, however Preston’s buzzsaw assault saw her ahead on all of the scorecards in a great action fight.
WMC super bantamweight NZ champion Freya Thomson turned back the challenge of Australian lightweight champion Jenny Lau, being ahead on two of the three judges scorecards in the first international superfight of the evening.
On the undercard, Mandela Ali edged by Ben Tia Tia with a majority decision.
Melody Downs opend the event, taking a unanimous judges nod against Natalia Teller.
