News from AIBA Women's Youth World Championships

The AIBA Women's Youth World Championships are happening this in India and two New Zealanders have been sent over to compete in the tournament.

The two women that were sent over was the Commonwealth Youth Silver medalist Shylah Waikai and Commonwealth Youth Bronze medalist Pelea Fruean. Unfortunately both women were drawn the worst spots in the tournament.

Waikai fought against Australian Indianna Heibloem in the preliminary round. Heibloem who also fought in the Commonwealth youth games only made it to the quarter finals. Unfortunately Waikai lost the bout by 5 - 0.

Pelea Fruean took on Makhliyo Rakhimova from Uzbekistan in the preliminaries. Fruean won the bout by 4 - 1 leading into the top 16. In the top 16 Fruean took on Vittoria De Carlo from Italy. Unfortunately Fruean lost the bout by 5 - 0.

Despite losing in the first two rounds, just being able to qualify and compete in these tournaments is a big accomplishments, not forgetting to mention their medals from the commonwealth youth games.

Hopefully both women can compete at the next Summer Youth Olympics but I know they have already made their country proud.
