ONE Championship - Tigers of Asia
Before 2009 Ev Ting had not even trained in mixed martial arts. Now? after coming through amateur ranks, then becoming pro in 2011, the Auckland MMA based featherweight fighter is one of New Zealand's rising MMA fighters making his mark in Asia. It has been announced that Ting will fight for the fifth time at ONE Championship - Tigers of Asia in his home city of Kuala Lumpur on October 9th 2015.
"Finding out my fight is at my birth town Kuala Lumpur again is always exciting (Although I don't mind going elsewhere also)," Ting explains, "I have a good loyal support team there and I train hard to bring back the W no matter where the fight is."
Although Ting is based in Auckland he has been training at the prestigious Saigon Sports Club in Vietnam this year gaining more knowledge, skill and for the chance to train with the best, "Training at Saigon Sports Club is great, there is a team of world class athletes that is hungry to win. Also training in the climate here is more similar to fight conditions of ONE Championship being based in Asia and Hamish is always in my corner for my fights."
Auckland MMA head coach Hamish Robertson started training Ev "Evil Tiger" Ting in 2009 and with his great experience in international MMA fighting and training fighters like Dave Nicholls, Multiple San Shou National New Zealand Champions plus many more he believes in a fighter like Ting."It has been great to watch him improve and grow and be in his corner for all his fights. Ev has a number of strengths and his work ethic in the gym is great and he also trains smart. He also has the ability to put it together in the cage and perform under pressure." expresses Robertson. Ting has worked extremely hard, this year in particular and is ready for any opponent, "I have been training full time all this year trying my best to craft myself into a complete fighter, I plan to perform exceptionally every time I step in the cage.
Ting is set to face Former ONE FC featherweight champion and WUSHU specialist Honorio "The Rock" Banario from the Philippines gym Lakay MMA with a record of 8 wins and 5 losses. Although he has not won a fight since February 2013, Banario is also known for his lightning quick striking game. Ting (9 wins 3 losses) explains "No firm and specific strategy for Honorio, however I take pride in my striking, ability to adapt and also my all-rounded-ness. Therefore I plan to mix it up and take him on a trip that ends before it starts for him."
The stage is set, the challenge has been laid and head coach Robertson feels confident in Ting's ability "I will meet them in Kuala Lumpur on 6th October a few days before the fight. I will help with the weight cut and then corner him for the fight. This should be an exciting fight and I am sure Ev will finish his opponent."
"Many thanks to my NZ Sponsors RedRat Clothing, Culley's Hot Sauce!! NZMMA and of course my home gym Auckland MMA - Miss my team and friends back in Auckland!" - Ev Ting.
