CKB’s Alexander Volkanovski has tested positive for Covid

We can confirm that UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has tested positive for Covid 19. This morning we reported his upcoming fight against Brian Ortega was cancelled alongside that of City Kickboxing teammate Brad Riddell, Shane Young is also present in the camp but no confirmation has been made on the fate of his scheduled fight.

Tests earlier in the week showed Volkanovski was negative for the deadly disease both before leaving Australia and prior to entering the UFC bubble but a most recent test inside the bubble has shown positive for the CKB fighter. Volkanovski has been in training camp most of this week with his CKB teammates.

The cancellation will be a blow to the champ who was set to defend his title for a second time after having defeated Max Holloway in back to back title fights. Dana White confirmed following Holloway’s demolition of Calvin Kattar that Holloway would be in line for a third show at Volkanovski should the Australian get past Ortega.

It’s likely due to the close proximity of the CKB fighters that multiple other members of the camp will now be positive for the disease as well, which is what led to the cancellation of Riddell’s fight today. Check out our earlier article for more information.
