It was important for Nick that when he hosted the next boxing event that it did not clash with the Olympics or the All Blacks. This makes July 23rd perfect timing as the Olympics begin in Japan on the 23rd of July. This means the fight night will be over just in time to watch the opening ceremony after the event.
The main event of the evening will feature the undefeated Jerome Pampellone taking on the first international opponent of his professional boxing career. So far Jerome has seven wins to his name with four of his wins coming by way of knockout. Isaac Peach has been keeping Jerome busy with all of his seven fights happening over the last six months, without including his wins at the national amateur championships and his eight amateur fights from last year.
Jerome so far has been fighting in the Cruiserweight division due to the lack of opponents in the Light Heavyweight division. He had his first Light Heavyweight fight against the tough Joshua Tai last month. Jerome went the full six rounds winning by unanimous decision. Jerome who naturally fights at Light Heavyweight is now looking to take on opponents to test himself.
Isaac Peach who manages and trains Jerome said that they will take on anyone in Australia and New Zealand. As soon as the pandemic is over, they will be looking to fight more international opponents. The team is also looking to take on John Parker later in the year as they believe they should be the true contender for the New Zealand title that John is fighting for on July 10th. If everything goes right, the two will have their mega-fight in November, but in the meantime, Jerome must focus on the Australian challenger.
Michael Van Nimwegen (11 - 7 - 0) will be Jerome’s opponent for July 23rd at Sky City Theatre. This comes at a good time as Michael was originally supposed to fight Renold Quinlan at the end of the month, however, due to criminal charges, Renold was forced to cancel their fight. Renold Quinlan was also originally going to be Jerome opponent for July, but again criminal charges stopped that fight from happening.
Michael Van Nimwegen who has an amateur boxing background made his professional boxing debut in 2010. So far in his career, he has won two boxing titles, the New South Wales State Light Heavyweight Title back in 2012 and New South Wales State Cruiserweight Title earlier this year. In his career, he has fought a lot of credible boxers including World title contender Blake Caparello, IBO World title contender Serge Yannick, WBO China champion Peng Qu, former IBO World champion Renold Quinlan and former WBC Ranked boxer Reagan Dessaix.
This will be a tough challenge for Jerome, but a win for Jerome will open more doors and opportunities for bigger fights in Australia and New Zealand.
The undercard of the event will feature some of New Zealand’s finest talents including Chad Milnes second professional boxing fight of his career (making his professional debut on July 3rd) and returning to TV for the first time in 9 months is Joshua Francis (10 - 1 - 1). Both of their opponents will be announced later in the month, along with the rest of the undercard of this event.
